I use Hasselblad H1 cameras and Phase One,
P25 (22 million pixels) and P45 (39 million pixels) digital recorders, on
those Hasselblad H1 camera bodies.
Within the next few months, I will be
adding the 60-million pixel, Phase One, P65+ system to my list of
equipment.
I refuse to use the little, consumer-sized, 35mm digital cameras to
shoot anything.
Hasselblad, Mamiya and Phase One produce the
best pictures in the world.

Production Values
Once the "clock starts", I don't take
breaks, eat, drink or smoke. Part of my Booking Process includes
a complete timeline and shot list. Nothing will be left to
chance. Each event will be choreographed ahead of time so that
every goal and objective will be met without stress or trouble.
I always dress in a tux, dark business suit
or professional, new clothing to match the approved theme of the event.
I shoot at a rate that varies with each
assignment. Typically, I average about 100-200 shots per hour of
service.
But that volume depends on the budget,
activities, client and assignment. For instance, when I
am on-station, in the helicopter, I can easily shoot 1 picture every 3 or
4 seconds.
There is no limit to the number of shots that are
possible. If the event is a small, intimate affair, 150 total
pictures might be all that is required. Larger assignments could
require thousands of pictures.
Every special event is different.
I never know what I will be able to shoot until the event actually
starts.
I enjoy working in the studio and on
location. I used to have my own 6,000 square foot studio.
However, at one point, I decided that I could do more work and reach
more people, if I closed the studio and worked from rented studios all
across the country, as needed. That effectively lowered my
overhead costs and allowed me to charge my clients less for my services.
Today, I am location-portable. I
have all of the professional lighting, stage, controls and equipment
that I used to use in my studio. It can all be brought with
me or shipped to my locations, as needed.
Usually, I don't charge extra rental rates for most of this extra gear.
However, it does take a lot of extra time to prepare, load, transport, unload,
stage and to strike the extra gear. Unfortunately, that extra time will be billed.
Some locations
require specific Union assistance, setups days in
advance and tear-downs days later. When I worked with White
House Representatives, at a large ballroom here in Los Angeles, my
studio equipment needed to be staged and inspected by the Secret Service
3 days before the arrival of the Vice President. Then, I could
not retrieve my gear until a day after the event.
That is the kind of extra, time-consuming
effort that is required to meet the objectives of some assignments.
All extra time and costs for special shooting permits, catering, porta-potties,
makeup, wardrobe, personnel, communications, research, maintenance and
janitorial services, heavy equipment, fees, parking charges, portage, travel expenses,
professional talent, Fire, Police and Highway Patrol service factors will be billed directly
to you, as "Pass Through" charges.

I have experience shooting insurance
and re-staged traffic accident scenes, crime scene investigations, cars,
food, people, executives, political and movie VIP's, buildings, boat
races, construction sites, equipment, crime scenes, evidence, events, products,
medical operations, surgical procedures and product concepts.
I have worked from 250 feet
below ground (in the subway tunnels below Los Angeles) to 15,000 feet above
ground (for real estate construction interests). I don't shoot under water or in
rainy, wet environments. I will not risk loss or damage to my
gear.
I have shot fashion shows but I am not a
fashion photographer.
I have shot sports photography, games and
kids. I shot horses, swimming and archery events during the
L.A. Olympics, but I am not a sports photographer. |

I am a Small Event Specialist
I have single-handedly photographed huge,
complex, week-long Corporate Special Events with VIP presenters,
multiple locations, thousands of guests, huge entertainment budgets,
complex production values and with thousands of pictures taken.
However, I have also worked on small,
intimate special events, such as weddings, bat & bar mitzvahs, senior
presentations and debutante balls, where there has been plenty of time to shoot everything.
I just shot a VIP wedding that had more
than 600 guests. No, nothing ran according to schedule.
Everyone wanted to talk with the lovely couple and no one wanted to
leave. Everyone wanted to sit closer to the front, in the church
and the people at the back of the ballroom had no idea what was
happening at the front. Their video montage could not be seen by
the guests in the back and the dance floor was so crowded, no one could
move. Their food was served by a professional staff of 40
people. I had 2 other professional photographers and 2
videographers to assist me. Still, it took 18 hours (6a.m.
until 12 midnight) and more than 3,000 pictures to complete their day,
from start to finish.
Certainly, the larger events generate more
revenue and more referrals for me. However, I still prefer the
small events because I can actually work with my families on a 1-to-1
basis. I feel more satisfied when I can really work with my
families to produce individual, comfortable, elegant pictures of their
souls.
Destination Events
I am available to provide my professional
photography services anywhere in the country. My Passport is
current in case you want to send me to Italy....
My photography service prices are the same
regardless of where I work.
Just get me there and back.
All charges will be estimated and itemized
before the assignment begins. I don't charge for anything other
than what is necessary to complete the job as required and approved.
I don't charge for food, beverages or entertainment. Lodging is
variable depending on the job but I don't require much. I am
not a 5-star kindda guy. I'm more "back of the van with all of my
equipment, a pillow and an ice chest" kindda guy.
Destination events take a lot of
pre-visualization and planning. Nothing can be left to chance.
Last summer, I shot a wedding in Tecate, Mexico. I needed to be there
for 3 days, so I had to bring everything I owned with me. Food,
water, cooking stuff, etc., plus all of my camera gear.
These are not mini-vacations for me.
Nothing can be taken for granted. These events are very
serious for me. They take much more thought and preparation than
any local event I have ever done. But they produce a very
different kind of picture story. That is what makes them so fun.
Destination events are exciting and fun.
I always arrive a day or two early, at
no extra charge. I need to acclimate my thinking to the new
area. I need to feel the energy of my environment, to become
comfortable with the surroundings, people, schedule, customs, methods,
procedures and agendas. Only then can I begin to think creatively
and to do my job. I need to become the event. I need to know
my routine so well that I don't have to wear a watch to know what will
happen next. I have to live my events to feel satisfied that I
have done more than what was expected of me.
For the vast majority of my assignments,
there is no second chance. It has to be done right the first time.

I use my Hasselblad H1and Phase One,
P25, 22 million pixel digital camera systems on
all of my wedding, senior presentation, special event, aerial
photography and debutante ball events.
These are the same, high-end, medium-format cameras used by NASA in
our Space Shuttle program. These are the most expensive and the
sharpest cameras in the world. You have never seen
such high quality pictures. You'll be able to count the threads in
your shirt.

I use my Hasselblad H1and Phase One, 22
or 39 million pixel digital camera systems
on
all of my aerial, Food, Legal, Medical,
Industrial, Advertising, Commercial, Construction, Architectural,
Special Events, Public Relations, Publication, Political and Forensic
Photography assignments.
I use the Sinar, 4"x5" and my
Phase One, 39 million pixel large-format
digital camera system on my architectural, advertising, product,
catalog, food and commercial product assignments.
This highly refined, very complex,
"large-format" camera system allows me to
modify and to actually control the shapes and the focal points for
architectural, food, product and advertising photography. My
large format camera
system produces incredible pictures.
My photography clients and families expect to
receive the highest
possible resolutions, the best possible colors, in the shortest possible
time and at the lowest possible prices.
I am on time and on budget, 100% of the
time. Guaranteed.
Let's talk DIGITAL Photography
Film is the standard to which all
digital systems must be compared.
When I shoot film, I prefer Fuji Film
products. But, my clients have not asked for me to shoot
film for more than 3 years.
Digital camera systems are all electronic. A "Digital" camera does not use film to
record the "picture". Instead, it uses a
"light sensor" that is
covered with microscopic light recorders. Somehow, these tiny recorders
produce a very tiny electrical "digital" signal when they are exposed to
light. These little digital recorders use tiny picture elements, called "Pixels".
The larger the physical size of the Digital Light Sensor and the larger
the number of these microscopic pixels, the better the quality of the
resulting pictures.
Unlike with film, there is no base texture associated with digital
images, unless you are using a small, 35mm camera with small, "noisy",
35mm pixels. The smaller pixels produce something called
electronic noise. The larger pixels used in medium format digital
systems do not have that problem.
Digital colors can be manipulated and the
image resolution or sharpness can be increased as much as you wish,
unless you are shooting with a small, low pixel volume, 35mm camera.
Most 35mm digital camera systems use from 4 to 12 million 35mm-sized
pixels.
|
The bigger the camera, the better the
picture
There are 3 basic camera sizes available:
35mm, medium format and large format.
The actual Phase One image sensor is more
than twice the size of any 35mm camera sensor, producing sharper images
with more colors, densities and with less digital noise.
Any picture ever taken with any 35mm
camera, film or digital, by any photographer, would have looked better
if that picture could have been taken with a Hasselblad, medium format
camera. |
RAW, TIFF and JPEG
These are the three different types of
commonly used, digital photo files.
RAW files holds pure computer
information and can't be used for anything until they have been
converted into either a TIFF or a JPEG photo file.
TIFF files are huge, holding digital
information for each of the three RGB colors used to make a digital
picture, (Red, Green and Blue). An 8x10 TIFF file will be
22mb. A 16x20 TIFF file will be 85mb. TIFF files make the
best pictures. You can't email a TIFF file. You can't
use a TIFF file in a web page because they are so large.
JPEG files are tiny, holding only
300-700kb of highly compressed information. These tiny files
are only good enough for emails and internet web sites.
Prints made from JPEG files will be off color, muddy, blown out and
soft. By their very nature, all JPEG files dump the vast majority
of the digital information needed to make beautiful prints.
My Phase One digital recorders ONLY
shoot 25mb and 45mb RAW files.
Many 35mm shooters only shoot JPEG
images that produce low quality pictures, that have funky colors, poor
resolutions and that can't be closely cropped or enlarged beyond a basic
5x7 or 8x10 picture without falling apart.
Many 35mm shooters use the same
equipment that you have. Many have no idea how to properly
post-produce, convert or to Photoshop their images. Few take the
time to care enough to do it themselves.
I do. I personally convert my original, camera RAW files
into huge, 300dpi, sRGB, 25mb 8x10 and 40mb 11x14 TIFF files before
I Photoshop every picture that I shoot. Then, I reduce the
Photoshopped TIFF files into smaller, 300dpi, sRGB, 7mb, 4x5 TIFF
files for 4x5 Fuji Crystal Archive prints.
Finally, I personally convert my 4x5 TIFF files
into 100dpi, sRGB, 1 mb, 4x5 JPEG files for easy client review and final
image selections. My little JPEG files are identical to their
larger TIFF source files. Also, these 4x5 JPEG files open quickly
for easy review by my clients and families, regardless of what computers
they use to see their pictures for the first time.
My "continuous toned" photographic
prints are only made from high-definition, 300dpi TIFF files.
That means that my high-definition photographic images have colors that
smoothly transition from one end of the spectrum to the other.
Inkjet systems have to manufacture the colors, using 3 to 6 tanks of
dyes. Their colors will only be good approximations because they
don't have every color under the sun.
Unlike inkjet printers, I can print all
of the wonderful tones found in skin color. Inkjet printers
have to "fake" those colors because they do not exist within the ink
colors available for any inkjet printer. That is why they look so
"spotty" when you get close. That is how they are made... with
tiny spots of ink or paint.
I always print onto beautiful, thick, Fuji
Crystal Archive photographic paper. I never print onto Inkjet
paper with an inkjet printer. The per-print inkjet print costs
are the same as for beautiful, true photographic images. I don't
understand the allure of inkjet for some shooters. The
"non-continuous" inkjet colors, densities and tones are more spotty and
they will definitely fade faster than a true photograph will, under the same
storage circumstances.
Unless I am printing special effect "Giclee"
pictures on special charcoal or canvass papers, I prefer the look and
the feel of a thick, durable, Fuji Crystal Archive print papers.
That said, all of my huge outdoor banners, signs, posters and
courtroom exhibits are printed onto inkjet papers and substrates.
These materials are usually viewed from a distance and they will stand
up to weather better than will a true print. In those cases,
inkjet prints are "good enough".
